Important Notice

Attention Parents/Guardians, Former Students, and Eligible (Adult) Students:

Special Education records collected and maintained by the Canistota School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or provision of Special Education services must be retained in accordance with state and federal law for a period of five and one-half (5½) years after Special Education services have ended for a student.

Special Education services end when a student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, completes their educational program on June 30 of the year following their 21st birthday, or moves from the district.

This notice is to inform parents/guardians and former students of the Canistota School District's intent to destroy Special Education records for students whose Special Education services ended five and one-half years ago or longer. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student requests that the records be released to them prior to destruction.

Although these records are no longer needed by the district after five and one-half years, they may be important to parents/guardians or former students for purposes such as applying for Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, college admission, or other programs and services.

Parents/guardians or eligible (adult) students may request a copy of these records in writing or in person at:

Canistota School District
Attn: Morgan Gerken
P.O. Box 8
Canistota, SD 57012

Requests for copies must be received by July 10, 2026.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact Morgan Gerken at morgan.gerken@k12.sd.us or (605) 296-3458.
